We are Family . . . feeble feeble feeble family!

It is Saturday and beautiful out. The sun is shining. I have been recently diagnosed with a torn meniscus. First doctor called me and said, “surgery, you need surgery!” I went for a second opinion and the doctor said, “no surgery, physical therapy . .  it will take time . . .”

So there you have it — a new word added to my vocabulary — meniscus. I’ve heard the word before but I never paid attention to it. Now it’s become a major part of my vocabulary.

Elevator? Escalator? I have a torn meniscus.” “Taxi, just a few blocks please, I have a torn meniscus!” “Aleve, please, my meniscus is hurting.” “Happy hour, sure … just as long as I’m sitting – – I have a torn . . .

meniscus:  A crescent-shaped fibrocartilaginous structure that only partly divides a joint cavity.

torn:  Past part of tear

tear:  A hole or split in something caused by it having been pulled apart forcefully.

Put it together and what have you got? A big pain in the knee!

Napping, reading, wobbling around  — not too much but just enough to fall up the stairs and hurt my other knee (not too much, just a little.) And Drew sleeps. All this crazy activity while Thera prepares dinner.

Tomorrow? What’s happening tomorrow? Probably more of the same. Well, almost. I can already hear the buzzing of Thera’s brain, “So this is what they do on a beautiful sunny weekend day? Not for me, I’ve got fill my tomorrow up and get out of here!!!! 

And fill it up she did!

WHAT? Lettuce is NOT suppose to freeze in fridge!

This is news to me. I thought everything that was in the back of the fridge is suppose to freeze – – cheese, veggies, lettuce, everything and anything. I was reading The Haggler, the New York Times column written by David Segal, and I came across a Whirlpool update: ” I wanted to let you know that the new refrigerator was delivered on Tuesday. And it sounds like a normal fridge! Also, I put a bag of lettuce toward the back of the fridge and it didn’t freeze.

WHAT?!? Is this is a joke? I had my own nightmare of a fridge and after a year of constant repairs (the water dispenser kept freezing) I finally connected with a wonderful helpful rep on the phone and she actually had it replaced. I wanted to write a nice letter to her supervisor but I was afraid they would fire her for replacing the fridge . . .  since absolutely no one else I spoke with would do anything except send a repair person over with lots of sticky tape! I can’t even begin to tell you how many veggies, cheeses, and just about anything in the back of my fridge has to be thrown out because it all freezes if I leave it in the fridge for more than a day. So I read the column last week, went shopping, bought some chicken cutlets to stir fry, put the package in the bottom drawer and by the next day it was frozen. And when I say bottom drawer I don’t mean the freezer! I still dream of trashing my Kitchenaid fridge and I’ve talked several of my friends out of buying one . . . but, probably, not enough to make a difference.

Spread the word — And the word is NOT Kitchenaid.

A Good Egg

OH what a glorious morning . . . my drew is home!

HE: Squirting grapefruit juice all over as he digs into his morning half, while reading the paper and trying to get his stereo to respond. . .  which eventually it does — loudly!

ME: Getting first dibs on Ask Amy, drinking coffee, and mentally calculating how old the half dozen eggs are so I can figure out what to make my drew for breakfast. A nice fresh egg that has a strong upright, rich colored yolk shouldn’t be wasted on an omelette. However, I quickly think back and realize that I can’t even remember when I bought these eggs AND Drew has been gone for two weeks.

It’s so upsetting when I flip an egg and the yolks breaks. Happened this week in the apartment. Made eggs for Hannah . . . flipped ’em and one yolk started leaking. I tried to stop it. The last thing I want to serve is a leaky yolk on a pretty plate. (Come to think of it — we bought those eggs the same time we bought the ones I have at home –My birthday in April.)

So an omelette it was . . . and quite a pretty one.

I drank my banana, peanut butter, almond milk shake, Drew ate his pretty omelette and we read and giggled over Ask Amy!!!!

This is Going to Take Some Time to Figure Out

This is what happens when I let my blog go for a YEAR . . . Can’t figure out how to add pictures and format them . .  everything is different. So I have some pictures of our Sunday brunch at Essex. I have a great picture of my birthday presents from Rachel and Hannah . . . and I dug up the picture from last year when my hair was short. I wanted to post them. I definitely think I like more hair.

MORE HAIR covers MORE FACE. I like it.

Well Drew just called and he’s on his way home so I’m going to make some dinner. Nothing exciting to write. No time, tired but need to keep it going.  For now, you’ll have to sign on to Instagram to see a pic or two of yesterday!

OMG, First Try and I’M BACK IN!

Can’t believe I remembered my password on the first try! Has it been a year? No, I think not, it’s been more than a year since I last wrote anything. Well, let me tell you — I’ve been writing such great witty, haha funny, and sometimes deeply insightful posts in my head and I keep thinking, “I should write that down,” but I don’t because I’m sure that I will remember it all when I sit in front of my (new) Macbook Pro.

So here I am sitting at the dining room table waiting for all those words to tumble out of my brain . . . not happening. Still nothing. Well, forget the witty stuff, I’ll just start babbling and soon those creative juices I hear so much about will start flowing again.

Mid April and it’s 43 degrees out. I guess today I’ll complain about how cold it is for this time year. Only a week ago I was walking the streets of NYC dripping with sweat complaining about the heat. I have a very small window of comfort.

Today is my Birthday Brunch at Essex with the my girls and Drew. I don’t have many photos on Facebook but I remembered that Rachel posted one of us at Essex last year. Just checked the picture to make sure I’m not wearing the same t-shirt as last year. Wow, my hair was short! I’m hoping I look better in today’s pic. Let you know tomorrow. Maybe I’ll post them both.

Oops, getting late . . . . off to brunch.

Shame On You, Anthony Bourdain

Every Christmas our family has dinner in the city. Most restaurants are closed, others have special Christmas menus. My wants are simple: A good meal that is free of sesame and nuts.

Several years ago we saw Sweeney Todd at the Ziegfield (After all, it is a holiday movie. Isn’t red the color of Christmas?)  We made no reservations for dinner but Drew had a list in his pocket of Indian restaurants that were highly rated and open on Christmas day. After the movie we made our way downtown to a crowded Indian restaurant and after finally getting a table and ordering food I said to the waiter, “I’m allergic to sesame and nuts, just tell me which of the dishes I can eat.” And he so casually replied, “only the naan, but it’s very tasty.”  And so, I ate only the bread. It was very tasty.

Years ago we went to Les Halles Park Avenue. Service was great, food was excellent. Brasserie Les Halles home base of Chef-at-large Anthony Bourdain —Yup, that’s what the website (leshalles.net) said. And that’s why we went there . . . because it was an Anthony Bourdain restaurant!!!!!

This Christmas we decided to go back to Les Halles. I made a reservation and then checked the menu. Mmmm, I wanted DUCK! But then I noticed the fine print at the bottom of the menu. It said, “Our dressings may include canola oil, olive oil, or walnut oil.” Hmm, walnut oil, now that’s something I usually don’t see on a menu. But a nut is a nut is a nut and I had to call and find out if I would be comfortable ordering from the menu. (Be prepared. I didn’t want a repeat of our Indian dinner.)

So I called, “Hi, we have reservations for Christmas Day and I noticed on your menu that you use walnut oil. I’m allergic to nuts and sesame in any form. Is that going to be a problem?” He said, “No problem, the walnuts and walnut oils are listed on the menu as ingredients on certain salads. You’ll be fine with everything else.

On Christmas day I bring in some homemade potato pancakes and apple sauce for lunch. We hang around the apartment watching Drunk History until it’s time to go to dinner. Our table was in the back, a little tight but, hey, it’s New York. We check out the menu and decide on a few appetizers, wine, and entrees.  I ordered the duck. Of course there are always questions: Any sesame or nuts in this dish? Is this vegetarian? The usual questions. But the answers, wow, I was stunned — we all were. The waitress said she would check with the kitchen to see about the nuts and sesame. She comes back to tell me that I can’t eat the duck. I can order meat or fish without sauce, and, oh, the side salad that comes with some of the dishes . . . nope, I can’t eat that either. We all look at each other. (Seriously, ALL the salads? Is it that hard to take a some lettuce and drip a few drops of olive oil over it?) The girls were ready to leave but, honestly, I didn’t know where we would go. My call, I said we’ll stay. I can always buy some chips and chocolate  after dinner. (Which I did.)

I order a piece of fish. Drew orders duck. Rachel orders the lamb chops with the fries on the side so it doesn’t touch the meat. Hannah ordered the quiche du jour which was asparagus and cheese. Food comes and I get my piece of fish, no sauce, no salad, and a few, very few veggies.  (For this I paid how much?) Drew is happy with his duck, Rachel gets her lamb chops with the fries on the same plate, and Hannah gets a quiche filled with mushrooms. Did I mention that Hannah doesn’t like mushrooms and that she is a vegetarian and that’s why we ordered the fries on a separate plate.

We finally get the waitress’ attention and tell her that the quiche is not what we ordered. “Oh, I guess there’s no more of the asparagus quiche left,” By this time Hannah picked out all the mushrooms and ate some of the quiche. We asked for fries on a separate plate. Hannah said she would be okay eating the fries. The waitress came by twice to say that they will be out soon. (Not soon enough, we were probably home in bed by time they got to the table.)

Very disappointing meal. She took the quiche off the bill. Not a very merry dinner experience. We should have gone to that nice little Thai place on 14th street. Does anyone know if Shake Shack is open on Christmas Day?  A vanilla malted with a side of fries — mmm, that would make me happy.

And there’s more: Hannah called the restaurant the next week and asked to talk to the manager. Here’s what Hannah had to say:

I still never got an answer from them! I am going to email them haha. But basically I called them and told the hostess what happened and asked to speak to a manager. She spoke to the manager and got back to me telling to call the GM (Magda) tomorrow because she would be the one to talk to. So I asked if she could leave a message for Magda anyway and that I would call back the next day. The next day I called for Magda and she was busy. I called back again the day after that and the hostess picked up and I explained to her that I called the other day and left a message for Magda. I explained the situation and said “I left a message yesterday and the day before but I guess it got lost or something” She replied, “it did not get lost. Magda saw it, she was just too busy to call you back.” Uhhhhhhhh
anyway, that is where the story ends FOR NOW!

Tradition

Today is Groundhog Day. Tradition says that if a groundhog can see its shadow after emerging from its burrow, then we will have six more weeks of winter. Looks like it’s going to be six more weeks of winter.  I can deal with that!

Speaking of tradition, let’s back track a bit to 2011 . . . a mild winter day . . . tradition . . .

After the potato pancakes the girls opened their presents. Rachel’s steamer was a hit. She set it up and started steaming her clothes. Hannah pulled off her dress and put it on minutes later — wrinkle free!

Watched a few episodes of Drunk History and then it was time for dinner. We had 7:30 reservations at Les Halles Park Avenue.  Eh, more on that tomorrow.
